Being a practitioner of Feng Shui, decluttering is seen as a crucial practice in incorporating its principles into your sacred space, setting the stage for a positive environment to flourish.
Did you know?
Clutter has the ability to drain energy and hinder personal growth, casting shadows on stress, focus, health, and relationships.
Specific types of clutter can impact different aspects of life, for example:
Clutter in the kitchen diminishes the essence of nourishment
Clutter in the bedroom disrupts the tranquillity of sleep
Clutter in the closet is linked to weight gain
Clutter in the living room can create disturbances in relationships
Embarking on the journey of decluttering often stirs emotions, calling for resilience, but it ultimately leads to clarity, revitalized energy, and a renewed sense of self-respect.
Here are my Top Tips to declutter effectively:
Like everything else on your to-do list, "tidy the house" will only get done if you SCHEDULE SOME TIME for it.
Open all windows and aerate the space well to bring fresh vibrant energy and/or diffuse any of the uplifting citrus oils, my favourite is Citrus Fresh by Young Living, you not only want your space to look and feel clean, but you also want it to smell clean too!
Get dressed in clothing that is practical, made of natural fibers and makes you feel good!
NEVER CLUTTER CLEAR WHEN YOU ARE ANGRY. Strong emotions get in the way of thinking clearly. To clear clutter you need an objective eye. A drop of Young Living's Valor essential oil on the wrists is a great way to start.
Feng Shui principles suggest bringing in some fire element colours (purple, reds, oranges) for an additional boost of energy for yourself and for the space you are working on, so set your diffuser colour to red or orange.
Put on music you love and START SMALL, FOCUSING ON ONE AREA AT A TIME to give you a sense of accomplishment.
Have bags/boxes to hold items for recycling, donations, giveaways, resale/consignment and garbage.
Go room-by-room. Start with the easiest and perhaps smallest room. Once you’ve picked a room (or even picked which draw or cupboard!), stick with it and complete it before moving onto the next. Remember that Rome was not built in a day so the clutter does not all have to be cleared at once but when you start you will not be able to stop because it feels so good!!
Take everything out first. As you handle each item, repeat the organizer's mantra:
"Do I want it?", "Do I need it?", "When did I last use/wear it?", and my all-time personal favourite: "What was I thinking?".
10. Affirm to yourself: "It is safe to let go." Decluttering involves releasing and having faith in life's process to provide what you require, rather than holding onto things out of fear of forgetting memories or for "just in case" scenarios. Using a few drops of Abundance and/or Release oils can be beneficial in this process.
11. Complete the task before you lose interest and reward yourself with a treat, whether it's a nice cup of tea or a movie night with a friend. Personally, I love receiving 'after photos' from clients showcasing their decluttering progress. Their sense of accomplishment, relief, and newfound lightness is truly gratifying, especially when shared with others.
